As the days get shorter and the leaves turn golden brown, it’s time to accept that summer is over and autumn is now in full swing. But just because summer is over your 2021 holidays don’t have to stop. Autumn is one of the best times to explore North Devon. From beautiful autumnal walks to a variety of themed events, there’s still plenty to see and do in North Devon as the air turns a little colder.
We’ve compiled a list of our top 5 favourite things to see and do in North Devon this Autumn. Check them all out in our latest blog post below!
If you’re looking for the perfect autumn walk you can’t go wrong with exploring Heddon’s Mouth. Starting at the Hunter’s Inn pub and arriving at the mouth of the Heddon river, this picturesque woodland walk will take you under a gorgeous golden canopy of autumnal finery. Between the towering cliffs and coves the wooded valley boasts many trails perfect for experienced and novice walkers alike. The area is a protected National Trust site and you can download the walk from their website here.
Another ideal place to explore this autumn is the historical site of Morte Point. Shrouded in history of shipwrecks and smugglers it’s the perfect location for a spooky, Halloween expedition. The name literally translates as ‘death-point’ and is notorious for being the site of many shipwrecks, five were wrecked there in 1852 alone. The site also belongs to the National Trust and is situated between the village of Mortehoe and the seaside resort of Woolacombe. Always very busy in the summer, come September, the quieter months mean that it’s the perfect place for a peaceful autumnal walk.
The Exmoor Dark Skies Festival is taking place from Friday 22nd October – Sunday 7th November this year. The festival is now in its 5th year and will play host to a huge array of after-dark entertainment. Enjoy night trails, dusk safaris of the local wildlife, moonlight swimming sessions and exciting workshops to teach you all about astronomy, astrophotography and night navigation. Check out the full event programme over on their website here.
If you want see autumn ablaze there’s no better place than RHS Garden Rosemoor. The attraction is situated only 30 mins away from us here at Riverside. RHS Garden Rosemoor has a rich horticultural heritage, and displays a variety of styles to inspire visitors for a glorious day out in Devon. Their Fruit and Vegetable Garden is a must see at this time of year as all produce begins to ripen ready for harvesting.
The beach may be cold at this time of year, but it’s typically quiet so the stunning views can be enjoyed in peace. Walk across Westward Ho! Beach to get your fix of fresh air, and warm up afterwards with a cup of tea and a cake in one of the area’s most popular cafes, Tea on the Green.
