What To Do In North Devon This Winter

North Devon is typically famous for being one of the top UK summer holiday destinations. However, what you might not realise is that there’s plenty to do here all year round. We admit we may be a little biased, but we think our little corner of the county is worth a visit throughout every season.

In case you need a little more convincing, we’ve summarised our Top 5 not to be missed events happening in North Devon over the first few colder months of the year. All are under an hour’s drive from us here at Riverside! Check them out below.

Winter Sculpture Exhibition At RHS Rosemoor

Each year RHS Rosemoor do a fabulous job of seeking out new and returning artists whose pieces enhance their beautiful gardens’ natural landscapes and their hardworking teams’ seasonal planting. This year the exhibition features the work of 28 sculptors from across the UK, including a number of local artists based here in the Westcountry. Their sculptures range from fluid and hypnotic installations, to thought-provoking, large-scale pieces that’ll stop you in your tracks. The exhibition runs until the 31st Jan so still time to pay them a visit. You can find out more about the event and RHS Rosemoor over on their website here.

Climbing At Rock & Rapid Adventures

Situated only a stones throw away from us here at Riverside, is one of North Devon’s most exciting adventure centres. As the biggest climbing and bouldering centre in North Devon, Rock and Rapid offers a great variety of activities both indoors and outdoors. We’d recommend checking them out this month as they’re offering a special Climbing Induction discount throughout the month of Jan. All climbing inductions with them are currently less than half price now at just £10 per person instead of their usual rate of £25. If you fancy trying something new this year, make sure to get yourself booked in. You can find out more over on their website linked here.

Lentshred At Clovelly

If you’re looking to explore some more traditional culture this one will be right up your street. Lentsherd (pronounced ‘Lanshard’) is an old Clovelly Shrove Tuesday custom. The aim is to chase bad spirits away and drive the devil into the sea before Lent. At dusk children set off Down-a-long, dragging clattering tin cans which are then tied together and thrown into the sea (later retrieved). Children taking part receive a free pancake to decorate with toppings. A fun tradition that has been going on for centuries. Find out more about this year’s event here.

Be The First To Visit Snowdrop Valley

Located right in the hidden heart of Exmoor close to Wheddon Cross, lies the beautiful Snowdrop Valley. Privately owned by the Badgworthy Land Company, they kindly allow access to the valley while the beautiful carpet of snowdrops is in bloom. Only available at this time of year, the vally offers some stunning walking routes that are otherwise off limits to the public. This year the event runs from Saturday 27th January until Sunday 25th February you can find out more about the event including access and parking here.

Beat the January Blues at Exmoor Zoo

Exmoor Zoo is another great option for a day out especially if you’re bringing the kids. Open all year round, it’s home to wide variety of different species including the notorious Exmoor Beast! It has the only black leopard on exhibit in the UK. They have a different program of activities in both Summer and Winter so even if you’ve visited before there’ll still be something new to see at this time of year. Find everything you need to know about opening times and ticket prices on their website here.
